tomas vandecasteele / sharpness is a bourgeois concept

tomas2_lespetitsbelges

We proudly announce Tomas his first solo photo exhibition at St. Vincents. Vandecasteele is a man of self-reinvention. Having studied philosophy and comparative cultural studies at the University of Ghent, Tomas set aside his marketing career in pursuit of a life dedicated to photography. Shooting for established publications of the likes of ELLE, A Magazine and Citizen K and many brands including Nike and Tim van Steenbergen.

He is now presenting an artistic body of work, reflecting on the concept of sharpness. The assertion “sharpness is a bourgeois concept” is a quote from photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. Cartier-Bresson dismissed sharpness as an essential attribute of a good photograph. It is interesting that a fashion photographer (a type of photography where sharpness is almost constant) would choose to work around the idea of blur explicitly. We’re looking forward to discovering his work during the exhibition.
