NIKI FAES / ESSENTIALISM
The Library of Harelbeke shows in april an expo of Niki Faes. A Belgian artist who works with different materials on canvas and had some graphic mixed media expositions in the past. Her current work is shown in three strong lines of force.
In the series “Mirrors of light” we are faced with landscapes that are reflected in other landscapes. Each painting looks like a reflection of the other, except the monochrome colors are changed in a very delicate way. By using cement paint in these works the artist creates a result of vision in motion, motion in vision. The sight changes with the point of view of the spectator. And increasing light is removing darkness. Increasing darkness, removing light.
In the works entitled ‘Sparkling light’ she uses pure pigments to reach the essence of each color. The colors create sensuous expansions in which space embodies. With that technique monochromes develop into unexpected universes which produce radiation.
In the works entitled ‘Vitality’ she tries to define several values by searching the origin of color and form. Tin, copper and even a hint of silver create a form of vibration in the monochrome body of the paintings and the vertical lines painted in jet-black provide a demarcation line and look like exclamation marks measuring the certitudes and warning the time. Contrasts between warm and cold tones are revealed mutually and are complementing each other. The atmosphere of intimacy leads to intrusion into the deepest form of the painting.
Finally, the intention of all the exhibited work is to absorb the spectator into the painting so that he identifies himself with it and recognizes his own psyche. In that way each painting develops into a real workshop for personal meditation.
After the inauguration follows the presentation of the art box edition “Autonoom” with ten poems written by Tony Rombouts and ten giclé prints made by Niki Faes, published in a limited edition of fifty copies.
